It wasn't Disneyland, but

We've been sick. Not with anything serious thankfully, but just weeks of the yuck. Our Disney trip was rescheduled, but we (OK, mostly me) had to get out of the house. So we drove to Julian, a cute little gold rush mountain town. I thought it would be fun to go find fall, since the season change is so subtle here. I also thought it would be fun to wear pants, since I haven't worn them once since we left Connecticut. (I feel really badly writing that for all my Alaska friends who are reading. Sorry!)

My streak of awesome luck continued when my camera broke several minutes into our adventure. As it turns out, it's just a minor repair and it's already at a repair shop. I was glad to get a few photos though. But this apple orchard was certainly not the prettiest part of the day.

We picked apples, then went to a little farm on the site of an old gold mine. The boys made apple cider, feed the leftover apple scraps to the goats, pigs and chickens; then we all took a hay ride and learned a little about the place we were spending our morning.

After all that activity, we journeyed into town, which is known for its pie. One stroll down Main Street yielded multiple, delicious-smelling bakeries and eateries.

We got sandwiches and a caramel apple to share for our picnic
by a lake in the state park on the way home.

And we bought an apple-pumpkin pie to take home.

Mo, who loves pie, has declared that it's his absolute favorite (his mom's homemade pie excluded, of course). I liked it too, but I liked getting out of the house even more.
Here's hoping these bugs go away soon!

  2. oh Julian! Of course I have to comment about me 1st! I went to 6th grade camp near there and get this, I met a girl in Stuttgart who is from Julian. FROM there. You saw how small the place is and I meet someone from there stationed in Germany! Crazy! Anyway, I'm sorry you're all sick. It's so much worse when you're sick with the kids as opposed to just them sick. I'm so glad you got out and are seeing so many thing! I love seeing your California Adventures;)

  4. California fall is the best. Your jeans, Isaac's fleece, apple-pumpkin pie, and a few deciduous are all you need. We are having a beautiful fall too (I scraped ice of my car windows yesterday)!
